The team had some nice stretches this afternoon, but they are incredibly soft in the paint and that killed them down the stretch. 31 points for Luke Petrasek, who could do whatever he wanted against Gettings and Warren. Bryce Aiken and Evan Boudreaux will eat this team for breakfast.
Robert Hatter looked like he may be out for a week or two, so if that's the case, we'll have to find another scoring option with two tough games coming up.
Other Impressions:
- Jack Gordon could end up being a real contributor during conference play. He needs to develop a bit more beyond just a spot-up shooter to do so, however. The scouting report will get out that he's a jump shooter who can barely dribble out of a paper bag, and teams will do what Columbia did in the second half, and deny him the ball at the three point line.
- Bathurst needs to sit until they can figure out a suitable role for him on the team. He's in attack mode every time he catches the ball, and he'll inevitably chuck up an ill-advised off balanced shot or contested three that clanks off the back rim. He also blew numerous defensive assignments that led directly to easy baskets this afternoon. Not impressed with him in the least, and it's head-scratching that Earl is giving him a bigger role than Darryl Smith and Joel Davis.
- JoJo: as good as ever on the defensive end. He should continue to get major minutes.
- They are still freezing Matt Morgan out of the offense. He's the best player on the floor, so they should obviously be running the offense through him, not through Stone Gettings and Josh Warren as they are doing right now. This will continue to cost Cornell close games and jeopardize (perhaps unfairly) Morgan's pro prospects. I thought Earl was someone who would be flexible and tailor his system to the current group of kids.
- JoJo and Troy Whiteside are still telegraphing their passes, and no one on the staff has seemed to notice all year. Not good.
- This team may actually have a chance to make it to the Palestra for the conference tournament, if only because other four teams in the bottom 5 are just so bad. They'll need to avoid the injury bug, and toughen up on defense to do so.
